Union State Bank Celebrated 100 Years as Alabama Community Bank At the turn of the last century three railroads merged in a place just forty miles east of the bustling industrial city of Birmingham. As often happened in those days, well into the American industrial revolution, a city sprang up where the rails crossed. Pell City, Alabama, in St. Clair County, has been a progressive southern town for more than one hundred years. In 1903 a group of far-sighted businessmen, led by J. Fall Roberson, Sr., joined forces to form a bank to serve the future businesses and citizens of Pell City and St. Clair County. One hundred years and four generations of independent banking experience later Union State Bank enters the new millennium as a survivor: a survivor of the severe economic trials of 1907; a survivor of two world wars and the Great Depression; and, more recently, a survivor of the rush to merge small banks into big banks that has taken place over the past three decades across our nation and in our state. A rare breed of a bank in today's climate of "big is better" and "economies of scale," Union State has stuck to the old-fashioned idea that "you can't be all things to all people, but you can closely define your customers and serve them and their communities with the utmost in contemporary banking products, services and technology." Reed Alexander, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive, and Rex Alexander, President, are the third generation to grow up to manage the Bank, following their aunt, Gloria V. Roberson who succeeded her husband, J. Fall Roberson, Jr.. Mrs. Roberson, was involved with the Bank close to forty years, and was one of few women to head a bank in the United States. As an actively engaged bank executive she was involved in many facets of service in the Alabama banking industry, including the Alabama Independent Bankers Association as well as other state-wide banking organizations. Mrs. Roberson, who died in 1999, w a s an outstanding woman executive and an important role model for younger women who aspired to leadership in the business community, receiving national and statewide recognition for excellence in management. The Bank was originally chartered as The Bank of St. Clair County. The first President was the Honorable Sumpter Cogswell. In 1910 the Bank received a national charter and was renamed The First National Bank of Pell City. The name was changed again in 1918 to Union State Bank. The Bank has successfully emerged into the twenty-first century as a strong independent, community bank serving the Birmingham area with five, full-service offices, along with offices in St. Clair and Cherokee Counties. The Bank has assets of $260 million and 130 employees. 32 Court Street East (205) 594-4181 Denise Garrison AVP/ Office Manager TELEPHONE BANKING: PELL CITY: (205) 338-1000 BIRMINGHAM: (205) 254-3757 TOLL FREE: (800) 639-9555 info@unionstate.net |
