The Peoples Bank & Trust Company is one of Alabama's leading community banks. It is has been recognized for decades as a leader in community banking. Ted M. Henry is the Chairman of the Board and Don J. Giardina is the President and Chief Executive Officer. The bank was originally chartered on July 26, 1902, as The Peoples Savings Bank. It started with two people and $25,000.00 in assets. Charles M. Howard was the president during the first 18 years. The original location was on the north side of Water Avenue between Broad and Washington Streets in downtown Selma, Alabama. Commercial and trust powers were added and the name was changed on February 27, 1906 to The Peoples Bank & Trust Company. Also in 1906, the bank relocated to the corner of Broad Street and Water Avenue. Houston F. Cooper served as president from 1920 to 1933. In 1926, the interior of the bank was destroyed by fire. While remodeling was in process, the bank was temporarily located at #7 Broad Street. On January 1, 1934, during the depths of the Depression, W. Henry Plant, Sr. became president of the bank. Mr. Plant established a philosophy emphasizing service to the working man. The bank's slogan changed to "The Working Man's Friend." Under his management, the bank grew from the smallest to the largest in town. The modern history of The Peoples Bank & Trust Company is rooted in the administration of W. Henry Plant, Sr., who served until his death in 1953. In 1953, Dr. Rex J. Morthland became president. On October 13, 1959, the bank moved to a new building that was extensively expanded and remodeled, and continues to serve as headquarters of The Peoples Bank & Trust Company today. Dr. Morthland became chairman of the bank in 1971. His service as president of the American Bankers Association, 1973-1974, is one of the milestones in the history of Alabama banking. B. Frank Wilson succeeded Morthland as bank president in 1971. In August of 1973, a charter was granted to The Peoples Bank & Trust at the Selma Mall, N.A. In June 1974, the Mall branch moved to its present location. When Morthland retired to serve at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Wilson became Chairman of the Board. Richard P. Morthland was elected president in February 1980, carrying on the policies and programs established by his grandfather and father. In 1983, The Peoples Bank merged with The Greenville Bank acquiring the Butler Square, McKenzie and Georgiana branches. In 1984 and 1985, the Satterfield Plaza and Plantersville branches were added to better serve customers in Dallas County. In 1988, Horizons Insurance Agency was established as a subsidiary of The Peoples Bank to offer a broader range of services. Later that year, it was changed to Peoples Agency. In February 1994, The Peoples Bank & Trust Company merged with Citizens Bank of Prattville and added Millbrook and Centreville to its footprint in 1997. During 1998, The Peoples Bank enjoyed tremendous expansion with the purchase of Merchants and Planters in Montevallo and the merger with the Bank of Tallassee. In addition, the Woodstock branch was established in north Bibb County and an office was established in Opelika. The year 2000 brought about many exciting changes at Peoples Bank as we opened full service branches in Helena and Tuscaloosa was added to our footprint with a full service branch. In June 2001, an office was added in Auburn, Alabama. In 2004, three loan production offices were established in fast growing markets. These offices are located in Birmingham, Montgomery on the Interstate-59 corridor connecting Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. Walter A. Parrent was named President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of the holding company, and its subsidiary, The Peoples Bank and Trust Company in September 2005. In May 2006, Mr. Parrent died after a brief illness and Ted M. Henry served as interim CEO until September 2006 when Don J. Giardiana was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer. The Peoples Bank & Trust Company continues to provide a full range of financial services to the customers of Central Alabama. We have 25 offices located in 10 Alabama counties and we employ approximately 300 people.. |
